Nestled between Sicily and the North African coast, Malta is going to spoil you with crystal-clear turquoise waters, picturesque ancient cities, and a rich cultural heritage – from the capital city of Valletta, a UNESCO World Heritage site, to the stunning Blue Lagoon and the medieval fortified city of Mdina. And sometimes that’s all it needs to clear your head and take a short break from work. So, I spontaneously booked a trip to Malta, which has been surprising in many ways.
To get to the small island in the Mediterranean Sea, I hopped on a direct 2-hour flight with Air Malta. Once there, I took an airport shuttle, which I pre-booked at Malta Transfer for 7€ one-way, to get to my accommodation in Sliema. Alternatively, you can also use Uber or Bolt, which both work very well in Malta, to get to your place but also to basically everywhere around the island.
And while Malta has not been on top of my travel bucket list, I hope you are gonna put it there after I’ve taken you on a virtual journey through the enchanting highlights of this gem in the Mediterranean Sea. Because despite being a comparatively cheap travel destination in Europe, it has much more in store than one might think. And here’s what you definitely shouldn’t miss when you’re also planning to embark on a getaway to the mesmerizing island of Malta.
I recommend to start your trip in Malta’s capital city. Weither you decide to wander through the city’s charming streets lined with historic buildings and quaint cafés or visit the Lower Barrakka Gardens for some great views of The Three Cities, you will immediately fall in love with Valletta.
If you decide to stay in Sliema, like I did, you’re in the perfect spot to explore the area’s charming backstreets and its boutiques and local eateries, enjoy a scenic stroll along the promenade or head out for a fun night out at one of the several lively bars. But Sliema is also a great location to cool off by swimming or sunbathing at the rocky beaches.
For a special ferry ride, take one of the last ferries from Valletta to Sliema. Trust me, it’s worth it because you get to marvel at the beautiful skyline of the capital city during the night and it’s only € 1.50 for a single or € 2.80 return ticket. So, definitely a bargain sightseeing tip.
My personal highlight was definitely a trip to the “Silent City”. Get lost in the narrow medieval streets of Mdina and discover its stunning architecture and ancient palaces such as St. Paul’s Cathedral, make sure to also stroll through the closeby city of Rabat.
But while there, don’t forget to explore other parts of the island. For example, mesmerize the azure-blue water on a boat tour from Wied iż-Żurrieq to the captivating natural caves Blue Grotto in the south of the island and take a dip in the water afterwards.
Or how about a visit to Marsaxlokk, a charming fishing village on Malta’s southeastern coast. There, stroll along its vibrant waterfront with colorful traditional fishing boats, known as “luzzus”, or take a boat trip along the rocky coastline to St. Peter’s Pool.

Ready to leave the island, at least for a day? Then hop on a ferry to Malta’s sister island, Gozo, and discover the picturesque Citadel in Victoria, visit the Blue Hole in Dwejra, sun-bath at Ramla Beach, or take a short boat trip to the Blue Lagoon next to the tiny islet of Comino.
